Tibet Today brings Tibet closer to you

Press Release 30 th March 2008
Under International pressure, diplomats from 15 countries visited Tibet . But they were not allowed to visit places independently. This goes to show that China lacks the confidence and has lots to hide from the international community.
Following yesterday’s protests in Lhasa , the Martial Law like situation was reimposed. In Ngaba Kirti monastery and Taktsang Lhamo Kirti Monastery, the Chinese Army arrested hundreds of monks and confisticated arrows, knives and guns placed in the protecting deities’ chamber. Chinese media implicated that the weapons were meant to use violence. However anyone who is familiar with Tibetan Buddhism would know that weapons in the protecting deities’ chamber is customary offering to the deities that befits the deities’ armoury. The weapons are also offering to deities when people pledge to denounce violence.
It is clear that the programs implemented by the government of PRC for a very long time has gone against the aspiration of the Tibetan people. The Chinese authorities continue to pursue the same mistakes. The continued suppression of the peaceful demonstrators and not giving any thought to the wishes of the Tibetan people and the causes of the peaceful demonstrations is a case in point. Moreover, the patriotic re-education classes have been intensified than ever before. But the Tibetan people are not relenting. For Example, more than 40 reincarnated Lamas in Kham Karze Sershul district were given patriotic re-education. The congregation of Lamas made it clear that the present crisis in Tibet has nothing to do with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The Chinese government would be held responsible if they persist with such misinformation and conspiracy theories.
Similarly, as per the recent public announcements of the Ngaba Tibetan Autonomous prefecture authorities, “To reform and cleanse the monasteries of separatist elements, severe restrictions would be placed on the number of monks in monasteries. In depth searches would be conducted to remove the roots of separatist monks and supporters. All monks and nuns below the age of 18, monks from other places, in particular the monks who have illegally returned back from foreign countries would have to be probed to confirm their links with the separatist Dalai Clique. All efforts would be made to remove these elements”. All these actions and policies will inflict more mental pain to the Tibetans and will not help in resolving the Tibetan issue.
The heavy deployment of the Army in the whole of Tibet has contributed to creating more tension. The continued detention of Tibetans through covert and overt ways in addition to night searches has resulted in many people missing or untraceable.
In view of the present crisis in Tibet , we urgently appeal to the UN and the International community to:
