The Situation in Tibet is a Challenge to the Conscience of the World

Dharamsala 21st March 2008: The Speaker of the US house of Commons, Nancy Pelosi along with ten other US congressmen along with their co-staffs arrived Dharamsala to meet His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Several thousand Tibetans along with their supporters at Tsuglagkhang in Dharamsala welcomed the speaker by waving American flags. Speaker Pelosi said, "It is our destiny, that we are here with you at this difficult time to help the people of Tibet."

Speaker Pelosi said the "situation in Tibet is a challenge to the conscience of the world and the world should know what is happening inside Tibet."

"If the freedom loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China’s oppression in China and Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world," the Speaker added.

In addition, she said that the Chinese government's accusation on Holiness the Dalai Lama for instigating violence in Tibet doesn't make sense since Dalai Lama is universally considered an embodiment of non-violence and compassion. She further added that her goverment will put effort to send an independent search team into Tibet to find the reality.

Besides, she said the Chinese government should engage in negotiation with Dalai Lama to resolve the issue of Tibet and also said that China should give access to journalists into Tibet to see first hand situation in Tibet and provide medical assistance to those Tibetans, who have been injured in the protests.
