The International Olympic Committee is investigating an alleged police assault on a journalist near the Olympic Stadium.

John Ray said he was detained for around 20 minutes and his equipment bag was confiscated

One of our reporters in Beijing, John Taylor, says a small group of foreign pro-Tibet supporters unfurled a banner near the Olympic Stadium around lunchtime today.

They were quickly pounced on by police. So too was a British television journalist.

He says at one stage he was forcibly held down, with police stepping on his hands.

John Ray from ITN news says he was detained for about 20 minutes, before being released.

The International Olympic Committee says it is investigating.

China has repeatedly pledged to allow foreign media broad freedoms to do their work during the Games.

But they have come under criticism for continuing to stop them from reporting on sensitive issues.

Dalai Lama says don't isolate China

The Dalai Lama says the international community has a responsibility "to bring China into the mainstream of world democracy."

Speaking in Paris before a meeting with French lawmakers the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said China is very keen to join the world community and the world must not isolate it.

The Dalai Lama is on a 12-day visit to France but will not meet with President Nicolas Sarkozy.
