Indian government bows to Chinese pressure
When His Holiness the Dalai Lama declared his Strasbourg proposal to the outside world, many of Tibetans were shocked greatly. Since it was His Holiness, the Tibetans stand by him in words and in action. For next two decades His Holiness put forward the goal of “genuine autonomy” and wrest initiative to engage China directly.

It was during the same period, when His Holiness took the issue of Tibet on a global stage. It was a very significant move. More and more countries extend their support and solidarity to what they called the “just cause” of Tibet.

When His Holiness made the Strasbourg Proposal, it was a hailed as a middle ground, a realistic approach to solve Tibet’s issue amicably. However, many of Tibetans who stand for complete independence were disappointed. The most notable person among them was Jamyang Norbu. The celebrated scholar and author, he raised his voice on the futility of such engagement with China and concessions tagged to it.

Since then he has written series of articles and essays about engagement with China. He has been one of the ardent advocator of independence for Tibet and has been constantly warning about the dangers of trusting or leaning too close to the Chinese leaders. Twenty years down the line, since Strasbourg, negotiations and concessions has been made to the Chinese side, the Tibetan activism has been toned down, His Holiness no longer advocates independence for Tibet, but in return the Chinese side has not traded anything to Tibetans in return.

The six rounds of talks have so far been conducted, were all largely dubbed as breaking mistrusts and misperceptions between the two sides. There is a growing frustration amongst Tibetans world over, the size of protests rallies grow in size every year.
