VARANASI: Woollen garments worth of several lakh rupees reduced to ashes when fire caught in the temporarily created shops of Tibetans in Englishialine area under Sigra police station.
As many as 14 Tibetans had hired the land of Varanasi Nagar Nigam at Englishialine to create their temporary shops of woollen garments for two months. To keep watch on the shops made of tin and plastic sheets one of the shopkeepers used to stay there at night while others dwell in the rented rooms in nearby areas. The Tibetan shopkeepers had left one Thapa to watch the shops on Sunday night.
This watchman noticed flames in some shops in early morning. He raised an alarm and also tried to control the situation. He sustained burn injuries in this bid. Receiving the information the fire fighters also reached there but before they could extinguish the fire nine shops were gutted. The shopkeepers, mostly women, could be seen crying near the structures of their shops.
They claimed that stock of woollen garments amounting Rs one lakh was present in the shops. They also alleged that in the name of help some mischievous elements looted the woollen garments of other five shops. The cause of fire could not become clear. |
