Indira Gandhi National Open University to Honour His Holiness the Dalai Lama with Doctorate

DHARAMSALA, India-- The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will confer an honorary doctor of letters degree on His Holiness the Dalai Lama at its 24th convocation on 5 September, the university said.

"His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be awarded the degree of doctor of letters (Honoris Causa)," a report in the university's website said.  

Mr Tenzin Taklha, Joint Secretary at the Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, said, “His Holiness the Dalai Lama will accept the honourary doctorate to be conferred by IGNOU on 5 September.”

Dr. D. Purandeswari, Minister of State for Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) and Mr. E. Ahamed, Minister of State (MOS) for Ministry of External Affairs and MHRD have conveyed their consent as chief guests.

A total of 1,04,168 students from across India will receive their degrees on the occasion.
