An Australian parliamentary delegation will meet the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, and senior members of the Tibetan parliament in exile in India later today.

The group is calling for a peaceful resolution to the stalemate between Tibetan leaders and the Chinese government.

It is the first time an Australian parliamentary delegation including Australian MPs and senators has visited Dharamsala.

The group includes members from the Government, the Opposition, the Greens and independent Senator Nick Xenophon.

Labor MP Michael Danby is calling on the Chinese government to listen to the wishes of the Tibetan leadership.

"Our Chinese friends should regard us as a bridge to the moderates," he said.

"We would like to go and visit Tibet too and we've made that offer to the Chinese ambassador."

The delegation will also meet senior political and community leaders.
